For my second Apollo project of the semester, me and Nolan Vasali looked at the LGBT perspective from the lens of high school students. We got a lot of good perspectives on the issues of LGBT rights, how people view the LGBT community, and why people view the community a certain way. This topic interested me as I am a very pro-LGBT, and I wanted to see how our school viewed the community. From our research I learned more about how LGBT individuals view themselves and how others view them. My art portion was on how a trans individual may view themself, our english portion was two personal essays reflecting on how our opinions have changed on the community, and our social studies portion was a podcast where we talked about our views on the LGBT community, our survey results, and our personal essays.
Honors Portfolio 2
For my art portion, I created a painting from the perspective of a trans male who felt extreme discomfort with their body and tore off their breasts. My artist of inspiration is Marco Grassi. I liked his gold experience collection of paintings and based my piece on his work. I especially liked his use of colors. From emulating his styles I learned more about tones and values when applied to shade. I also improved my general drawing & painting skills when it comes to anatomy and the human figure. To practice for my painting I did multiple anatomy studies. I looked at female anatomy, human face figures, and arm anatomy. In my process, you can see pictures I took of my studies. I used an interview with a trans individual to get a good perspective for my art piece. I tried to make the man look trapped, discomforted, and in pain in the piece. Honors Self in Modern World
For our social studies portion, I and Nolan conducted two surveys on LGBT issues. They both had the same questions, but they were sent to different demographics. The first demographic was CYHS, and the second one was Twitter. We had success with our CYHS survey. On the contrary, we had one response on our Twitter survey. It flopped hard. We tried using Instagram, and we even came in contact with a previous Apollo student so they could post it on their Twitter. In the end, nothing helped. The consensus at the end of our CYHS survey was one in support of LGBT rights and individuals. At the end of the CYHS survey, we asked if the participant if they were okay with being interviewed. We got a couple of names, but we only interviewed three. Interviewee #1 was asexual and a trans male. We mainly asked questions on how they came to realize who they were, and how they thought the world saw them. Interviewee #2 was largely against the LGBT community. He said his main reason was religion. Interviewee #3 was a male-preferred pansexual. We asked him questions about how he realized who he was and how his family reacted to him coming out. We also created a podcast where we go over this in much deeper detail and give our own takes. Click the button to view it.

Honors English 4
For our English portion, we created personal essays that reflect on how our perspectives on LGBT issues, minority groups, and politics have changed from middle school to now. To give a quick synopsis of my essay, I went from a close-minded conservative to an open-minded market-socialist. I currently consider myself anti-fascist and anti-racist, and I believe much more in transitioning and diversifying media. In the essay, I go over my transition from 8th to 12th grade in much greater detail. Here is a quick synopsis of Nolan's essay: Nolan went from not understanding the LGBT community to defending the LGBT community. We read our essays in our podcast, or if you prefer you can read my essay by clicking the button.
